ILT purchased what was then known as the McDonald Building back in 1945 as accommodation, renaming it The Hotel Avenal. After many renovations and remodels, the look of the gabled homestead was restored in 1983 and it officially opened as The Avenal Homestead Family Restaurant. Described as offering ‘full restaurant service at family prices’, we’re still following that recipe today.   

With the solid approach of Manaakitanga and southern hospitality at the forefront of our values, The Homestead has long been the region’s favourite family restaurant. With a complete refurbishment in 2019, we continue to offer a welcoming and relaxed environment where friends and whanau can take the opportunity to create those special, memorable moments.

And yes, the famous choo choo train is still chugging around the restaurant!
